B-FEST 2026 - Bad movies are the safest form of mind transportation

A few weeks late, but it is once again time for my increasingly out-of-place writeup of a movie festival on what is otherwise exclusively a music blog.  Plan is to continue doing this every year until either I or the festival dies.  Ms. Tweet and I often mockingly proclaim the internet-ism "so tired, y'all" when describing how we're doing.  Well, there are some B-Fests where my main lingering impression is less the fun we had so much as the exhaustion it bore.  This was kinda one of those.  For the first time of which I'm aware, the festival was pushed to March, leading to some schedule scrambling.  I was in the throes of a busy month that wasn't over yet in the midst of a time of great uncertainty, however much I slept it wasn't enough, and I showed up already about ready to nod off in my chair before the first movie had started.  At every chance to talk to those around me between films, I was bothered by the fact that I was dazed, feeling my least in...

B-FEST 2025: Are you outta your mind?!

The once a year occasion in which I blog about a weirdo movie festival!  For those somehow here through music, this one specific post is not about music; it's about an annual B-movie festival that I've been attending since 2004.  For those here specifically to read about B-Fest, hi, I'm Benjamin, this is my blog.  Normally I nerd out about rock music and try to put my impressions into words.  I like to think that I blog about the most random assortment of rock-related topics possible.  So, I'm close to the end of a series about my first listens to each and every album by indie-rock institution The National, and I've also written at length about my discovery of folk/death-metal greats Eluveitie, and I've also also done an album-by-album deep dive/fawning hagiography about the music of Scottish prog-rock writer and singer Fish.  More recently, I've just started up a series of posts going through Warren Zevon's discography, and a different series of posts...

B-FEST 2024: Just remember - don't do drugs, because B-Fest may just rip your face off

I've chosen to primarily nerd out about music on this here blog.   But once a year, I channel my energies into an annual celebration of bad and weird cinema at B-Fest, a 24+-hour B-movie marathon that I've been attending almost continually since 2004.  The event happens in the Norris student center on the Northwestern University campus and draws basically a small self-selecting group of weirdos who think it's fun to watch weird movies in a group setting.  I try to compile my thoughts and recollections. Lest anyone think that the fact that I'm not actually much of a movie person could lead me to not take this event seriously, I'll note that I was at a meeting in Colorado that I only signed up to go to once clear that it wouldn't conflict with B-Fest, and I got up at 0545 missing the last few talks on Fri morning specifically so I could go to B-Fest.  And further, when my flight from Denver was delayed six hours such that I'd miss the first few hours of ...
